Dutch Mustard releases new single 'Loser', co-written and co-produced with Bill Ryder-Jones.
Dreamy alt-rock artist Dutch Mustard - the moniker of Sarah-Jayne Riedel (AKA SJ) - releases new single ‘Loser’ via DM Records.
The origin story of the song is one of chutzpah, as SJ boldly dropped her latest demos into the DMs of big-name producers she admired to make this track a reality.
Co-written and co-produced with indie icon Bill Ryder-Jones, with mix notes from TV on The Radio’s Dave Sitek and arrangement input from William Doyle, "Loser" blends poignant guitar riffs and heartfelt vocals to create a narrative of vulnerability and resilience.
As SJ explains:
""Loser” is about making peace with heartbreak. We move on by accepting our feelings and understanding that not everyone speaks the truth. This doesn't mean we stop being truthful, just more careful with who we trust."
On Dutch Mustard’s infectious enthusiasm for the craft Bill Ryder-Jones says:
"'I love working with SJ....she's fucking hard to keep up with like. She has this knack of coming up with great ideas when I'm still admiring the last one.”
Netherlands born Dutch Mustard marries a blend of ethereal dream-pop and 90s alt-rock with timeless shoegaze touches. The overall soundscape layers abstract drones and washes with bouncing psych-infused guitar lines, whilst SJ’s vocals drift between a borderline whisper and heaven-directed lung-bursts.
The approach is firmly rooted in 2023, but the 90s influences aren’t hidden. She falls in-line with an exciting new wave of artists, with eyes to the ground, and heads in the clouds - NewDad, Bdrmm, cruush for example - who are making a fresh take on a storied genre.
In 2022 she released her debut EP An Interpretation of Depersonalisation, which was quickly featured by the BBC, getting airplay on Radio 1’s Future Artists with Jack Saunders and being selected by none other than rock's enduring sage Iggy Pop. This was followed by the Beauty EP in 2023, which saw similar acclaim - notably with multiple spins from Lauren Laverne on 6 Music, as well as backing from Don Letts and Amy Lamé.
Press wise The Independent, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, DORK and Notion have supported in the UK - and perhaps most tellingly she was picked out by The Grammy Awards Site as one of ‘6 Female Fronted Acts Reviving Rock’ alongside Wet Leg, and others.
Since her debut release SJ has spent time writing and experimenting creatively, while also juggling bar work at one of London’s infamous music haunts, and engineer work at a prestigious North London studio. Surrounding herself with music at all times and always pushing to learn from those around her has made for a formidable band leader.
